Toddler's Rules of Possession

Goodness, Ashley has been such a stinker lately and extremely sneaky.  Some days she comes in with my makeup all over her face.  Other days she's clean the floors with my last box of baby wipes.  She gets her feelings hurt real easy and when she cries it's very high pitch and sounds like a jet taking off.  It definitely gets people's attention if we're in public. She's very possessive like most toddlers.  Although, she is almost out of that phase of life, she's very much a little girl.  Man, if we didn't train up our kids in doing what's right and fighting selfishness, this world would be scary.  Wait a minute!  Maybe some never did learn to be kind, selfless, and giving.  People are running around like BIG TODDLERS.  Hmmm.....

She makes me think of this:

Toddlers Rules of Possession

1. If I like it, it's mine.

2. If it's in my hand, it's mine.

3. If I can take it from you, it's mine.

4. If I had it a little while ago, it's mine.

5. If it's mine, it must NEVER appear to be yours in anyway.

6. If I'm doing or building something, all the pieces are mine.

7. If it looks just like mine, it is mine.

8. If I saw it first, it's mine.

9. If you are playing with something and you put it down, it automatically
becomes mine.

10. If it's broken, it's yours.

Do Genes Play a Factor in Obesity?

Genes Take Charge, and Diets Fall by the Wayside -Article written on May 8, 2007

You know, I've thought about this many times. Why is it that someone next to me is overweight, eats the same amount I do but can't get any weight off?  I've had friends who exercise as much as me or more, eat as much as me or less yet have serious weight issues. This is why I get angry when I see an overweight person get taunted.  I really believe some of it is genetics and some people have to work harder than others to lose weight and keep it off.

Just because you see an overweight person doesn't mean they're a pig and eat everything in site. Or that they lay on their couch all day.  I'm sure some of that is a case that can be made.  But I've always believed since I was a kid that some were born naturally skinny and some battled weight all through childhood and beyond.

My dad can eat like there is no tomorrow and he'll stay the skinny guy he is.  In fact, most all the guys in that side of the family AND the girls are skinny.  Even after kids.  Does that mean that they are all health conscious?  Heck no.

For the most part I don't do anything to lose weight, I just like to stay healthy for the sake of being healthy but fall off the wagon many times.  BUT, it's always broke my heart to see overweight kids or adults taunted.  I really liked this article.

Of course some really do pig out and some are couch potatoes.  Kids sit and play video games and get fat.  But so do my kids and they are skinny rails.  This article proved what I've always thought.

A fat person does not always equal lazy or big eater.  Genes can be a factor also.

Aerobie® Sprint Ring Review

I know with the age of movies, video games, and other distractions it's easy to let regular outside play go.  It is important and we can't forget that exercise through play can be LOTS of fun too!

Aerobie sent me their Sprint Ring to fly.  You throw it like you would a frisbee except it flies really, really far!  It's actually a lot easier to throw also.  Here is more info about it:

  • Flies twice as far as conventional discs
  • Patented high performance design
  • Perfect for backpacking
  • Thrilling games of catch
  • Compact 10 inch diameter size
  • Made in the U.S.A.
  • More Information
We took it to our street to play out on so we'd have lots of room to throw.  My sons ages 7 and 9 loved playing with it and stayed out for a good hour playing.  Even with the wind blowing, they had some good throws and had to keep backing up since the ring would fly much farther than they thought.  It's soft so you don't have to worry about them hitting their fingers hard when they catch it.

"Former US Surgeon General David Satcher observes that “children who are more physically fit do better academically.” Better grades are another good reason for moms to get kids to exercise."

I believe that one for sure.

If You Could Wish for a Trait, What Would it Be?

Charles and I have been sick this week which makes regular house maintenance hard.  However, while I'm cleaning every day I'm constantly looking for items to put in the donation boxes.  So rather than get upset, I'm glad the kids are dragging out stuff because it's making me see how much of it is junk rather than being tucked back away somewhere.  The Duggars said that when there is just too much stuff in the house, it makes it hard for the kids to keep up on it.  If everything doesn't have a place, they can get overwhelmed.  So I'm not doing a huge overhaul, just here and there as I can.  At least trying to donate 10 items a day.

I wish I was like my sis where she could just spot stuff and get rid of a truck full.  She's amazing, you should watch her in action.  If she were here she'd whip this place in shape like there was no tomorrow.  They live in South Africa so getting her advice is hard reaching.  (No pun intended, haha)

I just really got short changed on that organizational gene.  Sheesh.  Hopefully I can make up for it in other ways.  :)  We can't really have it all though can we?  Some may be good at organizing but not have the patience for kids. Or some are not that attractive but have the heart the size of Texas.  Or someone can be absolutely gorgeous on the outside but have an ugly heart.  Or someone that is rich but is lonely and has no one to share their life with. (At least real people that care).  Some would rather be thin, some taller, some shorter, etc.  The list goes on.  So I have to remind myself that.  We all wish something different about us and none of us really posses every single positive personality or physical trait out there.

When Charles and I were first married we took a counseling class. Well, it wasn't really a class but just us with the counselor.  He had a take a personality type quiz where the results would show who is more dominant or organized.  Well, the only part that REALLY stood out to me was the organizational part.

With 100 meaning the most organized.  I got a 4.  A FOUR!!!!

Crud.

So I looked at the positive side.  At least it wasn't a 0.  There was still hope for me yet.  Haha.

DedeMed's Mediterranean and Middle Eastern Spices Review

I was able to make a delicious meal to try the Seven Spice sent to me.  I had never even heard of this spice so I had no idea where to begin making it and where to find the ingredients.  Because I was short on time I couldn't search to the specialty stores to find some ingredients a recipe called for.  Well, I went onto the website which is just amazing because not only does she give you tons of Mediterranean recipes, but she includes a video on how to make it.  Since I could not find  a couple of the ingredients this recipe called for, I had to do without. You'll be able to tell by my picture.  Here is the recipe I would be trying from her site.  I'll include my own pictures of it.

Serves: 4-6
Difficulty: easy
Prep and Cook time: 20 minutes

Flat leaf parsley

Ingredients
1 lb. ground beef (or any meat you like)
1 cup flat leaf parsley (Store did not offer flat leaf which has a stronger taste so I had to use the curly parsley)
1 cup onion
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp 7 spices
Burger buns
Kabees and tomatoes for garnish (I had to do without the Kabees also)

Tahini Mayonnaise Sauce
3/4 cup mayonnaise
1 clove minced garlic
1 tbs lemon juice
2 tbs tahini paste
1/4 tsp paprika (optional)

Onion Parsley Garnish
1/2 cup chopped flat leaf parsley
1/2 cup sliced onion
1 tbs sumac (Could not get Sumac either)
1/2 tsp salt

In a food processor blend the onion and parsley until well blended, then add the ground meat, salt and 7 spices and blend until well combined.

Form meat into 4 or 6 burgers and cook on grill or in a pan for 7-8 minutes.

For the tahini mayonnaise sauce in a bowl combine the mayonnaise, tahini, lemon juice, garlic and paprika and set aside for topping.

For onion parsley garnish in a bowl combine the onions, parsley, salt and sumac.  To assemble the burgers, toast the buns and top both sides with tahini mayonnaise, add burger and top with onion/parsley then top with the other bun. Serve with kabeese and tomatoes.

Remember, I had to use regular parsley instead of flat leaf,
didn't have the Sumac needed for the garnish on top and
didn't use Kabees with tomatoes.

Things You NEVER Want to Catch Your Kid Doing

I was floored!

I happened to be looking through my pictures on my camera from that day so what did I do with it?  Take a picture.  Then freaked!  That's just gross.

Kids keep me on my toes.  Whether the girls are getting into my makeup, or baby Caleb using the dog's water to mop my kitchen floor.  It seems I have to keep alert every single minute.  Still, these crazy moments are the ones that give us stories to tell when they are introducing their first love to us.

So then I did a search for funny toddler videos and found this!

What Do You Consider Authentic Mexican Food?

Finally, Blogger is back up and running!  Ohhh, how I missed you. Sniff....

Anyway!  I was right in the middle of blogging about something a couple of days ago when it went down.  So, I'll try again.  Was blogging about Melanie turning 30.  :D

It was my husband's sister's birthday so we enjoyed getting together for a mexican meal.  Well, as good as us white people could make it.  Tee hee.... It's like Taco Bell.  They call themselves mexican food but we all knooooow, it's not.  Haha.  Maybe we should just call them Western tacos or maybe Westican food.  That would really help me a lot in choosing a restaurant if it would just clarify whether it's Mexican food or Westican food.

Melanie and Juan.  They have two kids.  Which means I'm an auntie to 8.  Whoot!

Charles told me I was awfully quiet why they were all sharing stories at the dinner table.  Why would I want to interrupt?  It was soooo great to hear how Charles tortured his two sisters.  I need to retain all that information.  Like how he'd jump on their cabbage patch dolls and make the heads fly off.  Or he'd hang them in a noose by their neck so the girls could run into them.  After the dinner, the next day, he was telling the kids to stop fighting.  I said "Well, at least their not hanging the girls' dolls in a noose to freak them out."  haha.

Okay, so I brought these beans and JUAN (who is from Mexico) said these were fantastic beans.  He even took the leftovers home. He said, if a mexican is complimenting your beans, that is a real compliment.  So I guess these aren't Westican Beans.  They're Mexican!  Whoo hoo!

Beans

(according to Juan)

1 lb of beans (soaked overnight first)
6 cups of water
1 whole onion
2 garlic cloves
1/2 package of bacon
2 cups of shredded cheese

Make sure you soak your beans overnight.  Then add everything but the cheese and cook for 2 hours.  Drain most of water before mashing.  You do NOT have to chop the onion, garlic, and bacon because it will mash real easy into the beans after cooking.  After you've mashed beans well then add the cheese.  Super delicious and always a hit!

Taking my Herd to the Buffet

Mother's Day was FANTASTIC!  My husband didn't know every Mother's Day is on a Sunday so he was caught off guard Saturday night when he found out.  The next morning I woke up to white roses (that you can plant), a card, and a Starbucks gift card.  Score!  He got up real early that morning to sneak off to the store before I awoke to make sure I had something.  Wow!  What a sweetie.

My mom and I Mother's Day 2011
After church we went with my parents to a chinese buffet.  It is very hard to get Charles to one but this one time he was happy to take me. Plus, they had crab soooo..... it was heavenly.  This one mom kept running up to the crab tray though every time they filled it.  Literally, they'd come with a new huge tray and she'd empty the whole thing in 2.7 seconds. Then we'd have to wait another 15 minutes for them to make more.  It took 3 times of this happening with the same lady before we finally got some. Next time I'm gonna pick up my table and just sit next to it.  Heh heh.  I didn't come for ordinary noodles, I came for the seafood baby!  My kids were cheering the whole way to the buffet because they love how everyone gets to pick what they want, have dessert.  Plus they have Breyers ice cream.  So everyone is happy.

Ryan is not in picture. Probably getting his 24th ice cream cone
Oh, funny story.  There was a line forming behind me while I was making ice cream cones for my whole family.  I'd get done with one cone and the kid behind me would reach out his hand for the scooper. But then I'd already be reaching for another cone.  So I'd make another one and when I was done with that one, he'd put his hand out again.  This happened 7 times before I handed it off.  Heh heh.  A long line was beginning to form behind me.  When I get back to the table and hand baby Caleb his cone, I realize that all my other kids had the same idea.  Caleb had several cones in front of him and he kept putting one down and trying another.

After we were done eating Ivy had a big smile on her face.  Then she sighed and said "I love China!"  At least my big boys don't yell "Lets go see Chinese people!" every time they want to visit a buffet anymore.

The Duggars: 20 and Counting!: Raising One of America's Largest Families--How they Do ItThe Duggar Dad loves taking his army to the buffets too. I can see why!  Your kids can eat like there is no tomorrow and everyone gets to pick whatever they want.  "What?  You're full?  Go get some more.  You never know, a famine could begin tomorrow!"

By the way, this is such a great book that I've read it twice and my husband has even read it.  I'll be reading it again too.  There is so many tips and ideas that I glean from this book.

If I Don't Blog for One Day...This is Why

I blog almost every single day on both blogs because I absolutely love writing.  When I don't blog it's because something crazy happened like I was hospitalized, had a baby, or was stuck running errands all day.

It was the latter!

Here is what happened.
My friend and I needed to do some major grocery shopping and also make some more laundry soap.  It was my second batch.  Can you believe my other batch lasted 8 months?  Holy cow! This one was Michele's first.  We figured we'd just team up and make 2 buckets at the same time.

Wanna see the recipe?

Note: In my last batch I used Zote soap so that's why the soap was pink.  This time we used Fels-Naptha so it's a different color and scent.

So then we headed to Ace Hardware because we had the buckets but not the lids.  Since mine and her husband were at home playing board games in between their work hours, we went off to get them some drinks.

Then we headed to Sam's Club together.  I decided this month to dedicate every single meal to being something easy where I pretty much don't cook.  I am going to focus on my house this month so we needed to take out the hours and hours of cooking I usually do.

On the way home we made a very, very, very important pit stop.  We grabbed ourselves some rockin' yummy Starbucks on ice!  Yum!  It was much needed at that point and special treat.

After I unloaded the groceries at my house we had to go pick up our kids from school.  After dropping them off with the guys we then headed to Fry's Grocery Store to fill in the blanks of what we needed.

AFTER we load all the groceries in the van a lady tells me I have a flat tire.  Great!  It's just my friend and I and I've never changed one by myself.  I did know where the stuff was for it so I pulled out the jack and located the spare which is under the van.

After I crawled under van to get tire, Michele loosened the nuts on the bad tire.

A lady worker comes and shows us where to put the jack.

As we were lifting the van with the jack, a guy comes to the rescue and does the rest!  Wow!  We were so happy.  I had black all over me but didn't care.  He was so much faster at it than us.  He looked at our bad tire and we are baffled as to why it went flat since it's new.  He couldn't figure it out either.  But we were so happy to get the groceries home!

FINALLY we made it home!  Yeah!

Michele tells me her router is not working for her wifi and couldn't get her cartoons working for the kids on her Wii.  I'm just like to tackle stuff right off the bat so we call up the company and spent an hour on the phone trying to get it up and running again.  The lady was very slow in giving us instructions and put us on hold a lot so we were just sitting there.  After another half hour of setting up the Wii, we were finally ready to start cooking.

Since after work the guys were gonna play another round of games, we decided to make some homemade pizza which was ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS.  We all made our favorite kinds so the one I made was pineapple and ham.  The kids had just a cheesy one.  The guys wanted pepperoni.  Oh, it was so good.  If you've seen my favorite pizza recipe, we used the scaled down version of how much crust we wanted.  (Towards bottom of recipe).  By the way, we just used Ragu spaghetti sauce to save time rather than making it from scratch.  How to make your own homemade pizza

Then it was time to make laundry soap together.  It's actually super easy and you would be AMAZED at how much money to save.  Not only that, it's good for people that have sensitive skin.  We made 10 gallons of it and then collapsed on her couch to take a breather before I had to head home.

It was 2am by the time I made it home.  Lets just say I sank into my bed that night and slept very hard.

Michele says when she's with me I run her ragged.  Heh heh.  I told her with as busy as I am all the time you'd think I'd have a perfect house but noooooo.  :D

Emerson Creek Pottery Brie Baker Review

Iris Brie Baker
Emerson Creek Pottery sent me this beautiful Brie Baker.  You can bake undividual pot pie or heat cheeses in it and these are lead-free!

If you ever served a baked brie, you know how messy it can become once people start eating it. This is why many people wrap their bake brie in puff pastry. Since it is so good, you do not wish to lose any bites. The advantage of the brie baker is that you can use it as the serving dish.

It's fun trying something so here is a great recipe to start out with!

Baked Brie

1 8-ounce wheel Brie cheese
2 tablespoons white wine (such as a dry Riesling)
1 tablespoon orange juice
1/4 cup sliced almonds

Place Brie in ceramic baker. Combine wine and orange juice and spread over Brie. Cover with almonds. Place in oven, then turn to 325 degrees F. to let dish warm up with oven. Bake for 15-20 minutes. Serve with French bread rounds. Serves 6-8.

One further note: Once you’ve put your Brie in the oven, keep an eye on it. You want it melting-soft and heated through and the toppings all “cooked,” but you don’t want burned, dried-out, or blackened Brie or toppings. Check at 10 minutes, again at 15, and again at 20 if it’s not done before that. Don’t raise the oven temperature higher than 325 degrees F. If the toppings seem to be drying out too fast, add another splash of liquid and/or cover the Brie dish with aluminum foil.

Thinking of My Mom

Mom, I never, ever, ever, ever, ever truly understood how hard you worked till I became a mother myself. Sigh.  I had no idea.  You always said "Just you wait and see" and I though you were full of it. When I went off to school every day, I honestly thought you just goofed off.  I had no idea what you did for us and I took it for granted.  You were such a hard worker and I can't even begin to tell you how much it meant to walk into the door from school and know you were there waiting for us.  I should've known those dishes didn't wash themselves and we didn't have a magic laundry machine that gathered it all up, washed, and put it all away.  It was YOU!  You made it a home for us.

My mom and I, 2002
Thank you, Mom

Honibe Honey Drop Review

Charles and I, even my kids, love hot tea.  Our absolute favorite is Sleepytime tea and we always put honey in it.  I was curious about these Honibe Honey Drops where you can just drop it right into your hot tea (or favorite hot drink) and it'll melt.  I always prefer honey in my tea rather than sugar.  My kids thought this was pretty cool but I think they also liked to pop them in their mouth like candy.

I don't think my tea was hot enough the first time around to easily melt it.  The kids made their tea real easy and there was less mess. It's pretty convenient to carry these around if needed also.

It's Just Stuff

Okay, it helps to get rid of stuff when you don't have people picking through your boxes and saying they need this or that. I've tried several time to rid of stuff and it's just frustrating. Finally last night my husband said to go ahead and clean house.  Just don't tell him what I'm getting rid of and he'll be fine.  YES!  Finally!  Of course I know what he really loves and I wouldn't touch it.  But for example, I just got a brand new set of plates and bowls given to me and I wanted to get rid of the other set that is slowly disappearing from use.  He didn't want me to get rid of the other set.  I honestly don't care about material things.  Just what we actually need.  I don't collect things.  The closest I get to collecting anything is aprons.  I love aprons but it's because I actually use them and I only have 5.   It's just stuff.  Things.

I guess I'd rather worry about a broken heart than broken china.

This week is conference week so it's really thrown me off my game getting stuff done.  I was able to relate to my friend's blog post awhile back.

"You see I am not one of those that CAN do it all. Confused? Let me explain. I cannot have happy children AND a sparkly house all at the same time. I cannot do yard work all day AND have a clean house, I cannot go grocery shopping AND have a clean house AND have a good dinner cooked all on the same day. Believe me it's not because I don't try...it's because...well...life is just too complicated."

She said it perfectly.  :)  You are awesome, Betty.  <---Code name.

This is why I want to simplify.  Clean house. Because I want to not feel guilty about playing with my kids and letting the house go for a day. When I don't have that much stuff, it doesn't even really get messy.  I remember when my house was like that and it just gives me peace in my heart and I really can do it all.  Cleaning? Ha!  It was a breeze.  I have to get back to that.  Lately, I played with my kids, talked to them, discussed issues, played board games, etc. and that's what I really care about.  Not cleaning a load of crap that we don't really even need.

It is conference week though and I've been pretty tired so it's been harder to focus on my projects.  I have some reviews I'd love to share with you and can't wait to.  :)

Skillet Bacon Jam Review

Whoa!  What is skillet bacon jam?
(That was the same question I had so I just HAD to try this out for myself.)

Here's what they say:
We make this bacon spread condiment called bacon jam..you say what?.. that’s right, we use niman ranch bacon and render it down along with onions, balsamic and other spices . It cooks for several hours until it is a perfect blend of smoky, tangy, savory and slightly sweet….basically spreadable bacony goodness!  USDA approved.
more information is available at www.skilletbaconjam.com or contacteat@skilletstreetfood.com
*****************************
Well, so after I got it I looked up all the uses for it.
We like to put it on our burger, serve it on crostini, perhaps on a grilled cheese, as a substitute for bacon on a BLT, or maybe the base for a vinaigrette.
Yum!
I also put some in the eggs I was scrambling for my family and they loved the added flavor.  I think my favorite though is using it in the burger.

Did you know Skillet Bacon Jam was featured on a segment of the Today Show for the best mail order food gifts for the holidays?

Less Mess. Less Stress

My goodness!  I feel like my brain is scattered this week as we have church conference allll this week.  I volunteered for the baby nursery Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.  There are lots of cute, adorable, squishy and crying babies.  I don't know if it's because I'm a mom to 6 or my patience level is incredibly high.  But even with all 17 babies under a year old crying, I had a big smile on my face the whole time.  They were just all so cute and I loved cuddling and changing them.  Is that weird?  I don't know.  It was wonderful.  Still tiring by the end of the night though.  There were so many toddlers in the other room that they had to split them up into two different rooms.

I am the Terminator of Procrastinators.  I have sooo many projects and have a hard getting myself started on them. It's not that I'm lazy.  Goodness no!  Most of the time if I have too much work, I feel scatterbrained and get little accomplished.  Every now and then I get one of those supercharged days where I get a ton done.  I was talking with a friend last night about how I would just do soooo much better with less stuff. I got boxes for every room of the house for donation.  as I am cleaning or see stuff, I want to throw stuff in them we don't need.  I have so many great organizational ideas but it cost money to implement some of them.  I believe very much in containerizing things.  Rather than just using the open space under the sink and shoving stuff in it.  When you have a spot for things and inside of something, it gives you a space limit.  Since I won't be robbing any container stores any time soon, I'll be buying things slowly at a time.  Wouldn't that be so weird?  News just in! Woman robs container store!  Cops now have her contained and detained.  Haha.

Wish me luck or pray for me hard.  I'll be working on several projects this week and hope to share them with you.  This is not coming from an expert organizer but from a desperate momma.  My goal?

Make things simpler.  Less cleaning. More playtime with kids.  Less mess.  Less stress.
